There is one passage of scripture that pits believers against each other in competition. Know what it is? No, there is not a random “Thou shalt get really good at Rock, Paper, Scissors,” or anything like that. It is found in Romans 12:10 and it says: Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
This is the only time that we are to compete with other believers. We are to outdo each other in showing honor. Now, take a brief poll of your church member’s facebook comment conversations…. Are the people in your church living out Romans 12:10? What is the reputation that believers have online? How do we treat each other on social media?
I for one am committed to changing this perception of believers, not just online, but in life. Today, make it your personal mission to not be outdone in showing honor. This might not feel natural, but that is why this is called a “Bootcamp.”
As I write this, I am planning to look my wife in the eyes and tell her how overwhelmed I am at the way she is able to parent our children. I am going to honor her motherly skill and heart. I am going to make a phone call and tell someone that they changed my life. I am going to take this assignment and look for ways to work it into every conversation that I have today, and there will be a lot of opportunities to apply this verse.
It just so happens that my daughter’s birthday lands on the day of this challenge. Many people from my family will be in my house, and I am committed to try this out on them. I want to know how this goes for you, so please send any stories or thoughts that you have on today’s assignment to Jason@jasonhundley.com so that I can hear about them.
